Description

The Royal Tokaji Company is a relatively recent addition to the ranks of Tokaj producers, having been founded in the Hungarian village of Mád in 1990. Acclaimed wine writer Hugh Johnson teamed up with Ben Howkins and winemaker Peter Vinding-Diers as founders after Johnson found the region to be not meeting its potential. Now, it is one of the most famous producers in the region.

Royal Tokaji focuses on the grape varieties Furmint, Hárslevelú and Muscat, which are grown in the estate’s top vineyards. The Mézes Mály vineyard is classified the highest as a Great First Growth, with Nyulászó, Szt Tamás and Betsek judged First Growths, and Birsalmás a second growth. These vineyards were classified at the end of the 17th Century by Prince Rakoczi of Hungary, well before the 1855 classification of Bordeaux.

Hárslevelú is an extensively planted grape variety in the Tokaji wine region where it yields a unique dry wine, a pure expression of its distinctive character.

This crisp, dry white is made exclusively from Harslevelu grapes and is part of the limited edition By Appointment portfolio.

Producer: Royal Tokaji

Region: Budapest

Country: Hungary

Colour: White

Bottling date: 2019 January

Winemaking: Very early harvest started in the second part of August. Bunches were destemmed, crushed and macerated for several hours in the presses. After pressing we fermented the musts in stainless steel tanks at 17°C using our own cultured yeasts. Prior to bottling the wine was kept on fine lees in stainless steel tanks to preserve the fresh fruitiness and the aromas of the wine.

Tasting notes: Pale green in appearance, fresh fragrant nose, crisp and dry with hints of spice accompanied by floral aromas and a long round finish. It’s intensely dry with a citrus acidity, minerality and super length. This vintage is outstanding for dry wines.

Food parings: Delicious as an aperitif, with seafood or white meats.

Service: Serve lightly chilled.

Alcohol degree: 12.5%
