Calvet is a French wine merchant/negociant firm that has an extensive catalogue of French wines, with a primary focus on producing value wine from Bordeaux. It makes blended and varietal wines from many of the significant French and international varieties, notably, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

The company was founded by Jean-Marie Calvet in Tain l’Hermitage in 1818 and soon expanded to Bordeaux, establishing itself with warehouse and an office in the city proper in 1849. It built a château in the Medoc in 1870. In 1889, Calvet Beaune was officially set up in Burgundy.

Having established itself throughout France, Calvet made its focus on Bordeaux, which remains the largest segment of its modern portfolio. It makes wines from several of Bordeaux’s more prestigious AOCs, including Saint-Emilion, Margaux and Sauternes, but its signature wines are value-priced red Bordeaux AOC.

Winemaking:

The grapes are harvested when overripe. During the maturation, a fungus: botrytis cinerea or the “noble rot» develops on the grape skins thanks to a particular microclimate in the region. In this condition grapes have an important concentration of juice and sugar. The grapes are picked one by one.

Tasting notes:

A beautiful gold colour.

A complex nose of white flowers, apricot and honey.

This wine is sweet and accompanied by an explosion of aromas (crystallized mandarin, apricot jam, citrus fruit) where a good acidity balances the richness in natural grape sugars.

Food pairings: This wine was selected to accompany foie gras, roquefort, pastries and fruits.x

Service temperature: 8 – 10 °C
