Description:

After taking over the family vineyards in 1985, Denis Durantou built a reputation as one of Bordeaux’s greatest winemakers. His flagship property, Eglise Clinet, became one of the appellation’s benchmark estates, regularly compared to greats such as Petrus and Lafleur. Durantou, who sadly passed in 2020, was known as the “genius of Pomerol”, both for the tremendous quality of his wines as well as for his extraordinary precision in the vineyard and cellar. His daughters have since assumed control, assisted by longtime winemaker Olivier Gautrat.

Wine notes:

Saintayme is 100% Merlot made from a nine hectare parcel of 35-year old vines immediately to the east of the village of St Emilion. The area is a slightly cooler part of St Emilion but has the same limestone, clay and gravel soils that underlie many of the appellation’s top chateaux and hosts famed chateaux including Valandraud. Saintayme is vinified in small, temperature controlled stainless steel vats and then undergoes malolactic fermentation in those same vats in order to allow for greater control of the yeast. The wine is subsequently aged in 30% new French oak for 14 months, with approximately 3000 cases made. One of St Emilion’s greatest bargains, this vin de garde has the ability to age and improve for at least a decade.

Tasting notes:

This wine has a nose of jam, a dense palate, blended tannins and a nice balance between elegance, structure and length.
